Concrete Sidewalk Installation in Kansas City

Sidewalks connect your home to the street, your garage to the house, and your patio to the garden. They need to be level, properly drained, and tough enough to handle foot traffic for decades. At Tommy's Concrete, we've been pouring sidewalks in Kansas City for over 50 years.

Why Sidewalks Crack and Heave

Kansas City weather is tough on concrete. Summer heat, winter freezes, and spring rains all take their toll. Most sidewalk failures come from poor base preparation or inadequate drainage. Water gets under the slab, freezes, expands, and pushes the concrete up. Then it thaws, the slab settles, and cracks form.

We prevent this by properly grading the subbase, using adequate gravel, and ensuring water flows away from the sidewalk. It takes more time upfront, but it saves you money in the long run.

Our Sidewalk Installation Process

Every sidewalk job follows the same basic steps. First, we excavate and remove any old concrete or debris. Then we grade the area and add compacted gravel base. Forms go up, reinforcement goes in if needed, and we pour.

Standard residential sidewalks are 4 inches thick. We use a broom finish for traction—smooth concrete gets slippery when wet. Control joints are cut every 4-5 feet to manage cracking.

Decorative Options

Plain gray concrete works fine, but if you want something more interesting, we offer stamped patterns and colored concrete. Stamped sidewalks can look like brick, flagstone, or slate. Integral color gives you consistent color throughout the slab, not just on top.

Sidewalk Repair vs. Replacement

Sometimes a sidewalk can be repaired. Small cracks can be sealed. Minor settling can sometimes be addressed. But if the damage is extensive—large cracks, major heaving, multiple sections failed—replacement is usually the better investment. We'll give you an honest assessment of what makes sense for your situation.
